How To Support A Relative Through Fertility Issues

WashimJanuary 25, 2025

Fertility struggles can be emotionally and physically challenging, not just for the person experiencing them but also for their loved ones. If you have a relative going through this, knowing how to provide thoughtful and meaningful support can make a huge difference. Here are some practical ways to show compassion and understanding during this difficult time.

  1. Educate Yourself About Fertility Challenges

A good starting point is understanding what your relative might be experiencing. Learn about common fertility treatments, such as IVF, IUI, and hormone therapies, as well as the emotional toll these processes can take. Doing your own research shows that you care and want to be informed, without expecting them to explain everything.

However, be careful about bringing up your newfound knowledge unless they invite you to discuss it. Respecting their boundaries is key.

  1. Listen Without Judging or Offering Solutions

One of the most powerful ways to support your relative is simply to listen. Avoid trying to fix the situation or offering unsolicited advice, such as “Just relax, and it will happen” or “Have you tried XYZ?” These comments, although well-meaning, can feel dismissive.

Instead, offer open-ended questions like, “How are you feeling today?” or “Is there anything you’d like to share with me?” Let them lead the conversation and provide a safe space to express their feelings.

  1. Be Mindful of Your Language

Fertility struggles are deeply personal, and certain phrases can unintentionally cause pain. For example, avoid saying things like:

  • “At least you can always adopt.”
  • “Maybe it wasn’t meant to be.”
  • “Everything happens for a reason.”

Instead, use empathetic and supportive language, such as:

  • “I’m here for you no matter what.”
  • “It’s okay to feel upset; this is really hard.”
  • “You’re so strong for facing this.”
  1. Respect Their Privacy

Some people are open about their fertility journey, while others prefer to keep it private. Let your relative decide how much they want to share and with whom. Don’t pressure them to talk about their situation or share updates if they’re not ready.

Similarly, avoid sharing their story with others unless they’ve explicitly given you permission.

  1. Offer Practical Support

Going through fertility treatments can be exhausting, both emotionally and physically. Offer practical help, such as:

  • Driving them to medical appointments.
  • Preparing meals or helping with household chores.
  • Babysitting other children if they have them.

Even small gestures, like sending a thoughtful care package or a supportive message, can show that you care.

  1. Be Patient and Avoid Timelines

Fertility struggles don’t have a set timeline, and the journey can be full of ups and downs. Be patient and avoid asking questions like, “Any news yet?” This can add pressure to an already stressful situation.

  1. Encourage Professional Support

While your support is invaluable, encourage your relative to seek help from professionals if needed. This fertility clinic suggests that fertility counsellors or support groups can provide additional emotional and mental health resources. Let them know it’s okay to seek help and that they don’t have to face this alone.

Supporting a relative through fertility issues requires empathy, patience, and respect. By educating yourself, listening without judgment, and offering practical help, you can provide the care and comfort they need during this challenging time. Most importantly, let them know they’re not alone and that you’ll be there for them every step of the way.
